You can also ask questions (after having read this) and we’ll try to answer it insha’Allah, but we encourage you to speak to someone knowledgeable and god fearing.

(Summary in pictures ...coming soon insha'Allah or email us and we'll prioritise it!)

NOTE: All the steps listed below is agreed upon by all four madhabs (schools of thought) and is rooted in daleel (evidence) from Qur'an, Sunnah, Ijma’ As-Sahaba (consensus of the companions of the prophet) and Qiyas (divine analogy).

However, only key evidences will be given (for details, please check the Book Fiqh As-Sunnah). If you're someone who has special circumstances (e.g. medical problems) then the shariah (Islamic law) allows provisions, but consult an appropriate alim (knowledgeable person) for details.

While doing your umrah if you become doubtful about whether you must or you mustn’t do something (maybe because different people said different things), and you don’t have access to a reliable source of knowledge or you don’t have the time, then you must avoid doing that particular action (if the doubt is about whether it invalidates your umrah/ ihram) or you must do the action (if the doubt is whether you have to do it or not).

"Both legal and illegal things are obvious, and in between them are (suspicious) doubtful matters. So whoever forsakes those doubtful things lest he may commit a sin, will definitely avoid what is clearly illegal; and whoever indulges in these (suspicious) doubtful things bravely, is likely to commit what is clearly illegal…” (Hadith)
Important NOTE: It is completely haram (forbidden) to adopt a hukm (verdict) based on personal benefit or what is easier for oneself.

Allah (SWT) says: "Have you seen him who takes his (own) desires as his lord (!)..." (Qur'an 45:23)

So, question yourself why you accepted a particular opinion (hukm) over others. One should try his utmost to follow the hukm which he believes to be the most correct, whether or not it will bring hardship on him. Since most Muslims are not aalims it is advised that you should stick to one source of knowledge, whether it's your madhab, your local imam or your umrah guide (if he/ she is knowledgeable enough).

"And complete the Hajj and Umrah in the service of Allah" (Qur'an 2.194)

Step 1:
Get in to the state of Ihram

Ihram is the intention to perform either Hajj or 'Umrah.

Before crossing the miqaat (pilgrimage boundary) you must make the niyyah of umrah, pray two rakat nafl or one of the fard prayers and and enter into the state of ihram. Make the niyyah by saying ' Labbaik. Allahumma labbayka bil 'Umrah' (Oh Allah! I answer your call to perform Umrah). You can also make du'a to Allah to help you accomplish this duty, and to accept your umrah.

After the prayers do the talbiyah (sunnah for men to do it loud):

Labbayka Allāhumma Labbayk. Labbayka Lā Sharīka Laka Labbayk. Inna l-Ḥamda, Wan-Niʻmata, Laka wal Mulk, Lā Sharīka Lak.

(Hadith: Muslim)

Translation: "Here I am at Your service O Allah, here I am. Here I am at Your service and You have no partners. To You is All Praise and All Bounty, and You alone is The Sovereignty. You have no partners."

Obligations of Ihram:

 Put on ihram clothing
 Make intention for umrah
 Pray two raka'ahs
 Do talbiyah*

NOTE: It is recommended that before you put on your ihram clothing you take a shower, clip your nails, remove your armpit and pubic hair, and put on perfume on the body.

Men will need to put on their ihram clothing while women can wear their normal khimar (headscarf) and jilbaab (long tunic outer garment). Use surah Al Kaafiroon and Surah Al Ikhlas to pray the 2 rakaats if you're praying on your own.

Ihram clothing (for men) is made up of two sheets of white cloth, one wraped around the waist (covering the space between the naval to the knee) and the other put over your shoulder covering your body. And it is sunnah to put on your ihram clothing at the fixed points of Miqat (hajj boundary around Makkah).

Men are not allowed to wear any stitched clothing or footwear, however wearing a racksack or a money belt around the waist is allowed.

"A person in a state of ihram is not allowed to wear a sewn shirt, a turban, a hooded robe, underpants, a cloth that has been dyed with sweet smelling fragrance, shoes or sewn slippers, unless one is unable to find regular unsewn slippers, then one may wear his shoes provided one cuts down to the ankles."(Hadith, Bukhari and Muslim) - Applies to men only!

The person who enters the state of ihram is called a Muhrim. A muhrim is restricted in terms of what he is allowed to do and what is not. You’ll find most people’s issues with regards to hajj is to do with ihram and whether or not someone deliberately broke these rules. So, get well acquainted with the following.

Forbidden (while in state of ihram):

To cut your nail, shave or pluck your hair
To apply perfume on yourself or on your body
To wear sewn clothes, incl. underwear (for men only) and sleeping bag!
To cover your head, and to hunt animals
Sexual intercourse and anything related to it such as kissing and touching your wife
Committing any form of sin, including disputing, arguing or fighting with companions or umrah organisers!

"Let there be no obscenity, nor wickedness nor wrangling in the Hajj" (Qur'an 2:197)

(For women) To cover the face with a veil or to cover the hands with gloves
Must not get married or help others get married*

Permissible (even while in state of ihram):

 To do ghusl from janaba
To do shower without perfumed soaps/ shampoo*
To comb hair without removing any! (I wouldn't risk it!)
 Cupping without cutting hair*
Itching and scratching (as long as no hair is removed!)
To eat fragrant food (e.g. oil, fat, butter) or to brush your teeth with scented toothpaste
To sit under a shade (instead of covering the head with a cloth)
To take your ihram off, to change it, or to wash it (due to dirt or najas)

*Penalty for Violating Ihram* If you, for a genuine reason, feel the need to break any of the rules of ihram deliberately (not unintentionally or due to ignorance of the rules), plucking hair or wearing sewn clothes because of cold then you must slaughter a sheep or feed six needy people or fast for three days to compensate for it, and ask Allah (swt) for forgiveness. But, you umrah will still be valid.

However, if you involve yourself in sexual intercourse with your wife then this invalidates your umrah, and you have to start all over again by going to the miqat (umrah boundary) and getting into the state of ihram.

Step 2:
Go to the Ka'aba and do the Tawaf al 'Umrah

Do the tawaf (circumbulation) anticlockwise around the Ka'bah (cube) seven times with your right shoulder uncovered (men only) while facing the Black Stone, kissing it if possible (sunnah) and making du'a or reciting from the Qur'an. Sunnah to begin by saying; Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, and to face the ka'aba throughout the tawaf. Looking at the ka’aba is a rewardable action in itself!

Sunnah du’a upon seeing the black stone:

“Bismillah wallahu akbar Allahumma imanan bika wa tasdiqan bikitabika wa wafa’an bi `ahdika wa ittiba`an li sunnati nabbiyyi sallalahu `alaihi wa sallam (In the Name of Allah. Allah is the Greatest. O Allah! [I begin this Tawaf] believing in You, affirming the truth of Your Book, fulfilling my covenant with You, and following the example of the Prophet, (peace and blessings be upon him).”

Sunnah du’a upon beginning the tawaf (on black stone):

"Subhan Allah wal hamdulilah wa la ilaha illallah wallahu akbar wa la haula quwwata illa billah (Glory to Allah, All praise is due to Allah, there is no god but Allah. Allah is the Greatest. There is no might nor power except with Allah)." (Hadith Ibn Majah)

Sunnah du’a upon reaching the Yemeni corner:

"Rabbana aatina fid dunya hasanatan wal fil aakhirati hasanatan wa qina adhaban nar (Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the hearafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire)." (Hadith, Abu Dawud)

Upon completing the 7 rounds, it is sunnah to offer two rak'ah prayer behind the station of Ibrahim reciting surah al kaafiroon and al ikhlas.

And then it is sunnah to drink water (facing the ka'aba) from the well of Zamzam (which can be found everywhere in the Haram- Sacred Precinct.

"The best water on earth is the water of Zamzam. It is food for the hungry, and a healing for the sick." (Hadith, At-tabarani)

Obligations of Tawaf:

Be in a state of wudu
Do tawaf 7 times, starting from the black stone corner and ending there.
(For men) to expose the right shoulder (idtiba) while doing tawaf

NOTE: After performing Tawaful 'Umrah you will not need to perform Tawaful Qudum (tawaf of arrival) or the Tawafal Tahayatul masjid (tawaf of entering the mosque).

It is recommended to do lots of Tawafal Tatawwu' (nafl, extra tawafs) even in your ordinary clothes to make the most of the time in front of the ka'aba since just looking at the ka'aba is a rewardable action in itself. It is sunnah to also do tawaf each time you enter the mosque and the two rakaat prayer before joining the jamaat. So, come early as tawaf can take you 30-60 minutes or more.It is sunnah to do ramal (jog) for men the first three rounds of tawaf and walk the remaining four. It is permissible to talk to someone during tawaf but only on good things. Women who are menstruating are not allowed to do tawaf.

Step 3:
Do the Sa'i between Safa and Marwah

One must perform tawaf before moving on to the sa'i (jogging) between mount Safa and Marwah (which is presently encapsulated within the premise of the grand mosque (the haram).

You must begin from Safa and end at Marwah after 7 rounds, and tread the path between the two. However, it is sunnah (recommended, but not obligatory) to climb the mountains a little but one must walk back and forth the full distance between the two points. If any of this distance is left untraversed then the sa'i will remain incomplete.

After completing the sa'i men and women must clip their hair. Men are encouraged to shave their head and women should clip just a tiny amount. (There are lots of barber shops all around the haram who do it very efficiently. Women should do it in their privacy.)

Once you clip your hair you come out of the state of ihram, and you can put on your regular clothes.

Obligations of Sa'i:

To begin after having done tawaf
To start from Safa and ending at Marwa
To do it 7 complete rounds
After completing all the above, clip your hair

NOTE: If the time for a jamaat begins while you're doing your sa'i then you are allowed to discontinue, join the jamaat where you are, and continue after the prayer where you left off.

It is also allowed to rest for a while after the tawaf before moving on to the sa'i.

It is preferable to be in a state of wudu while performing sa'I but this is not essential.

It is sunnah to jog between the Safa and Marwa, especially between the two markers.

It is sunnah to make supplication (du'a) while on the mountains. Click here for some sunnah duas. You can also recite Qur'an.

Your umrah is now complete. May Allah (Swt) accept your umrah, and forgive you of any shortcomings in performing the umrah.
